Where has summer vacation gone? What we've done so far
Is it possible that my summer break is nearly half over?
Really?
Here's what we've squeezed in so far.
Little G went to camp. The camp sign was VERY happy to see me. Seriously? Am I the only one who noticed that?
Oldest went to Hershey Park with the band, Middle G. fell in love with One Direction at a concert that tested my parking lot patience to its limit. It took us over three hours to get home. However, I think the positive memories we made outweighed the negative.
We hit the road as a family and stopped in West Virginia to visit my mom. She's all settled in and feeling at home. The kids had fun creek stomping and making s'mores.
We've been to the pool, although the weather hasn't been very cooperative. We've hung out with friends. We've said goodbye to friends. We played our last baseball game.
We played mini golf with grandparents. We've had ice cream and played in the slip and slide. We've crafted. We've scrapbooked. We've attempted some Pinterest crafts.
We've been to gymnastics class and soccer camp. We've had a few campfires and we've slept in the backyard.
We've eaten Popsicles. We've posed for countless photos. Sometimes pretending we like each other.
We fired BB guns. We took a few hikes. We swam on top of a freaking mountain. One of the most beautiful state park pools I've ever been too.
In hind sight, we've made quite a few memories.
Summer Vacation: What I'd like to accomplish
What do you hope to accomplish this summer?
I needed to finish up a few things at work this morning and I had a lunch time meeting. I told my kids to come up with three things they'd like to accomplish and complete them before I returned home.
The above is my nine year olds list. Isn't he a hoot?
This request got me thinking about what I'd like to accomplish prior to the end of summer vacation.
Declutter. This is pretty much a recurring theme of my life. The odds that much, if any, significant decluttering will occur are slim but putting it on the list makes me feel like it could possibly maybe sort of kind might get done and that makes me feel better.
Scrapbook. I'm tired of feeling guilty about wanting to scrapbook. I'm going to make 30 pages before school starts back up.
Spend time at the pool. I'm looking forward to the return of Poolside Perpective and quality time in chlorinate water.
Take a photo a day. I enjoy Instagram (follow me @kisatrtle) but I seldom post. While on break I'd like to try and take a photo a day. Here's today's.
Does the Lunchlady need her own blog? Thoughts? I've been debating about taking the lunch lesson in a new direction and having an all new Lessons From the a Lunchlady blog. I would still share my weekly lessons but I'd also talk about all things school nutrition. Would you read it?
It goes without saying that I'd like to blog a little more and visit all of you a little more. I hope to make a routine of these things. I'm planning some backyard fires and some visits with friends. I'm hoping to share a few awesomely cool memories with my kids and maybe even visit some old friends in Ohio.
I'm also planning to visit my sister whether she likes it or not.
How about you?
One week of summer remains
But alas, time marches on and before we know it fall will be blowing in.
Here's a look at what we did this summer.
I had a great time at book club and even manage to see Horrible Bosses and Bridesmaids with some great friends!
All in all summer has been a huge success!
Writer's Workshop: what I miss about the school year
However, I will admit that come August I start to long for my routine, I start to look forward to my return to the kitchen.
This week Mama Kat had great prompts including how you knew your child was growing up. Since I have already posted this letter to my 12 year old as well as this post about the tortures of puberty, I decided to skip the first prompt.
So today I will share with you five things I miss about the school year and five things I don't miss.
I miss the daily interaction with my co-workers.
I DO NOT miss the chaos that is our morning routine.
I miss having lunch with my principal.
I DO NOT miss my hairnet.
I miss the kindergartners.
I DO NOT miss the mess the kids make of the cafeteria.
I miss (most of) the teachers.
I DO NOT miss government meat products.
I miss, dare I say it, my boss.
I DO NOT miss the dish room and the dreaded GREEN SCRATCHY.
Oh crap...summer vacation is half over
Near the end of the school year, I came up with this list of all the things I'd like to accomplish this summer. Since (gasp) summer vacation is already half over, I thought we'd take a look at my progress.
Complete another edit I have successfully completed another edit of my YA novel and I am planning on actually submitting it for consideration before the end of summer! I am anxious and excited to see what lies ahead.
Paint my bedroom. I am taking baby steps towards this project. I picked out some colors I like and I am waiting for feedback from my hubby. Might have a girls night in painting party.
Enjoy my kids. For the most part, I have been doing fairly well with this. Of course, oldest did spend a week at camp and middle is leaving for camp next week. Plus, they have been participating in summer playground which may or may not be the only thing keeping me sane.
Visit the Crayola Factory. I have my doubts on this one. It is rather pricey and I'm not sure I am gonna attempt to swing it.
Clean and organize my craft room. The brown desk is out and the organization has begun. Pics to be posted tomorrow.
Fly to Florida. We leave on Thursday! White sand beaches and a wedding to celebrate. Doesn't get much better than that.
Summer Reading Club. We are signed up, but out of the 30 savenger hunts available we have only participated in 2. But I do have plans to do one tomorrow....
Scrapbook. My summer goal was 30 pages and so far I am at 4. This one might turn into an epic fail.
Bulletin boards. I promised some friends and co-workers help with their bulletin boards and I am making a lot of progress on this. The craft rooom is starting to look like a barnyard as I have about 30 cows and barns in the works.
Visit friends in Ohio. I don't think we are gonna make it out there, but out of the blue I found out some friends from Ohio will be staying with us in August.
Survive Camp. Done. The best part was all the visits from our friends. They made the week fly right by.
Visit family. The in-laws are coming to keep the kids when we are in Florida and my sister and her family will be visiting at the end of the month for my birthday. Life is good.
Have a fire (or 2 or 3). On Saturday, I had a rockin' good time with lots of friends from school as well as my neighbors. Food, a fire and some friends...who could ask for anything more.
Birthday books and school albums. Seeing as I've only made four pages it is pretty easy to figure out how this one is going...
Recharge. My favorite goal and the one I am having the most success with!
Come August 24th I'll be able to handle anything.
Including kale.
