Lessons from the Lunchlady: four times four is sixteen
This week was a short week as I had Monday off to allow for my brain to grow at ServSafe. Actually they didn't close school just to allow my brain to grow. Teachers were preparing report cards.
Here's what I learned.
We need to put pierogies on the menu more often. Raise your hand if you know what a pierogie is. A lot of our kiddos hadn't a clue and listening to five year olds try to pronounce it was fantastic. We had tacorogies, and rogies, pie-ogies and rearogies. It was delightful!

I haven't outgrown my LD in math. This might surprise all of you but I like to joke around. I am seldom serious. Serious people kind of annoy me. That being said, when I took a taped sign down in the cafeteria this week and pulled paint off of the number one I told the custodian that I messed up the number 416. Much to my surprise our gymnasium is not covered with random weird numbers like I assumed. They are apparently some kind of math idiom. After all, didn't I realize that 4x4 is sixteen and that the window directly across from it in the gym had 16 windows....um seriously? I'm not confident I could pass the 3rd grade math PSSA but we'll talk more about my LD next week in a post that I promise will not be serious.
Pizza on Thursday? Some students were very concerned that we perhaps cooked the wrong items this week as we always have pizza on Friday. I am often amazed by what kids will notice and by what they seem oblivious to..like that giant booger about to fall out on the serving line.
Mega Million Mania. We decided to play the lottery because 500 million is too amazing to ignore. The four of us (three lunchladies and the custodian) decided to buy 10 tickets and then our principal wanted in. She is an honorary member of the lunch bunch because she pretty much eats with us everyday, but when she threw a five dollar bill in my boss about lost it...demanding that she be given $2.50 back! "She can't have anymore millions than us" LOL. We agreed that 1/5 of 500 million was definitely enough.
Just don't give him a coat. I have talked about our custodian many times. He cleans up vomit, fixes sinks, refills paper towels and is a fly assassin . Today, however, when a kindergarten kid gave him a multi-layered jacket with many of the sleeves inside out he was stumped. After trying for at least five minutes all while the five year old stared on our fly assassin had to ask for help.
In conclusion, keep your coat on, don't pay more than your share, enjoy your pizza even if it's Thursday, order the rogies and remember that four times four is sixteen!

Things I learned in the Cafeteria
Today was my last day in the school kitchen until January 4th! I'm giddy about this vacation even if I have to share it with my kids. LOL
This week I learned:
- The Joys of Pajama Day. That's right...I got to wear my pajamas to work today. Jealous much?
- That, for the most part, I work with some really nice, amazing people.
- The closer it gets to Christmas the more out of control the kiddos become. It's like a drug.
- That I really do believe in Santa Claus.
- That parents seldom read the menu, let alone any changes you make to it.

Things I learned this week in the cafeteria
It's time once again to tell you what I learned this week in the cafeteria. This week has been quite stressful for multiple reasons.
- Serving Thanksgiving dinner to elementary age children encourages waste. I think only two kids out of 200 ate the stuffing.
- Half days are twice the headache.
- When the head cook takes a personally day prepare for hell.
- Computers seldom do what you expect them to do.
- People will try to get away with anything if they think they can. For example, when the head cook was off the substitute making breakfast tried to take 100 chocolate milk with her to her building leaving me with about 50. We use more than that at breakfast. WTF?
Needless to say, I am happy this week is over. My middle daughter has been fighting a fever on and off all week. Traveling for my gram's funeral didn't help the situation and now she has pneumonia.
I think our weekend plans will include a lot of rest.

Five things I learned in the Cafeteria
(Disclaimer: No one I work with looks like this. Why do all cartoons of lunch ladies look like this one? Seriously, Why?)
This week at the cafeteria, I learned the following:
- Chili is not a popular lunch item: Peanut butter and Jelly as an alternate nearly beat out the 67 chili's we served today.
- The longer you work there the less you find any child "cute". The janitor and the head cook are fine examples of this. Every kid knows how to push their buttons, as do I. (insert evil laugh here.)
- If offered, kids will take an apple just to throw it away: I'm not sure why but we grind up a lot of yummy looking-not-a-bite-taken-out-of-them apples every day in the garbage disposal.
- You can cut 50 oranges in less than 30 minutes. Putting two slices of each of those oranges into 100 tiny little annoying bags takes much longer.
- I hate cutting tomatoes. In fact, I hate everything about tomatoes.

Things I learned at the cafeteria this week...

I am happy to report that the kids (and I) are off of school tomorrow and Monday. Something to do with end of the marking period, give the teachers some time to do grades. Whatever. Sounds good to me.
That means a short work week this week and next. Yeah.
Here are a few things that I learned this week at the cafeteria:
- Bagged lunch day is awesome: Third grade had a field trip this week and we got to make bagged lunches for everyone. No trays and very little dishes. Doesn't get much better than that.
- Tuna is more popular than expected.
- Turkey and Gravy over Waffles? WTF? I thought it was over biscuit. Wow what a mess! K-3 should never be given gravy.
- If the head cook takes off you may be expected to come in at 7 a.m. to make the donuts...I mean french toast sticks. Memo to those in charge: Ain't ever gonna happen...
- Corn is persnickety: I expect to find stray kernels for the next week.

Things I learned at the cafeteria this week
Things have been hopin' at the elementary school cafeteria and I'm learning lots of new things everyday. Some of the things I learned this week include:
- My school district still celebrates the rape and pillage of America, otherwise known as Columbus Day. No school Monday.
- Chicken Pot Pie is not a pie on this side of Pennsylvania. On the western side of PA it is most definitely a pie. Here...not so much. It's what we westerners call soup.
- Making apple crisp for 200 people involves measurement's that include: pounds of flour and oats and bags of brown sugar. Are you hungry yet?
- If I call off because I have a sick child at home the odds that the state inspector will show up are high. Who knew???
- Chocolate milk is the most popular flavor of milk by far. This includes breakfast...fruit loops and chocolate milk anyone???

Things I learned this week
Can you believe that it's Thursday already. What have you learned since last week? My week flew by so I really had to sit and think about this for awhile. I think I came up with a few worth mentioning.
- I learned that finding snacks with fewer than 30 carbs is a lot harder than it should be. If you, or anyone you know, can make a few suggestions I would be quite grateful. Because of my nephew's diabetes he is restricted to snacks with fewer than 30 carbs, so I've really started paying attention to the carb count. Try it this week. I guarantee you'll be surprised.
- I learned that I'm anemic and need to take an iron supplement.
- I learned that I love my Garmin GPS! It helped me out of a HUGE traffic backup by providing me some back woods detour!
I learned that all of my children like watching college basketball-go figure.
I learned that I'm even more addicted to LOST than I ever thought possible. Can we trust Sun? Is she harboring some sort of grudge against Kate? Will she do something she regrets only to find out that Jin is still alive?
