To my daughter at the start of 4th grade

Dear Middle G.,

How can you be starting 4th grade? Wasn't I just dragging your brother out of the car to pick you up at preschool? Didn't you just tell me how much you loved kindergarten?

When did you become so independent? Why do we never agree about anything any more? Why do you always have to be right? How did you become so stubborn?

What happened to the little girl that held my hand and said, "I don't want to leave you mommy. It's not fair. You're gonna have fun without me"

Now you are off to intermediate school, where you will be the youngest in the building. A place where you won't find mommy in the lunch room. You'll be on your own. You will ride a different bus than the one that has been taking you to school for the last four years.

You will be surrounded by 5th and 6th graders, one of them your sister. Those silly songs played on the other bus will be replaced by ipods and an occasional swear word. You will change and grow even more this year than you did last year. I'm not ready for that. But trying to keep you little is like trying to catch the wind. Soon it blows right past you, only staying for a minute.

I'm excited for you to take on this new adventure, but part of me is sad.

Sad that I can't be there, if no one wants to sit with you at lunch.

Sad that I can't help you figure out what to do in that huge cafeteria.

Sad that you will have much fun without me.

I'm excited that you will likely make new friends this year and will cross my fingers that they will treat you the way you deserve to be treated because over the next few years you will value their opinion more than you value mine.

As I look at you, I can't help but remember the baby who looked at me such adoration and awe. The baby that never slept and didn't have much hair until she was two years old. Where did she go?

Do you know how much I love you? Good luck in 4th grade.

I'll be here when you get home.

Happy Birthday Middle G

Today is Middle G's 9th birthday. Today was her last day of school. She has been done for less than one hour and is already bored. She is cracking me up.

How can she possibly be bored already?

Tomorrow is her birthday party. We are having it at the pool again. It is a monkey theme this year. Below is a picture of the invitation.

Keeping with the monkey theme I thought I'd share advice for Middle G., who's age continues to sneak up with me.

  • Just keep swinging....at the ball, on the swing, everywhere. There is a lot to be said about persistence.
  • Bananas are good for you. Eat a balanced diet. Especially if you feel your mood swinging around.
  • Remember everyone comes with a few bugs. No one is perfect, not even you.
  • Stick with your family. Sadly as we grow we start to take our family for granted. Remember when the going gets tough your family will never leave you behind.
  • Have no fear. Take the leap and see what happens.
  • Don't pick your nose or your butt in public.
  • Be yourself and be proud of who you are.
  • Bang your chest and let out a growl every now and then.
  • And whatever you do, never throw your poop. Unless your in a forest and a grizzly bear is chasing you.

Happy Birthday, Middle G.

Love you forever,

Mommy

Writer's Workshop: A letter to my 8-year old

Dear Middle G,
Are you really 8 years old today?  How can that be?  Wasn't I just very overdue and miserable and begging my doctor to induce me??
I'm finding that your age really sneaks up on me.  It's different with oldest and even with your baby brother.  Your age often sneaks up on me and I just don't know why.  Here you are already finished with 2nd grade and so excited about 3rd.
Here are a few things I want you to remember as you approach double digits.

  • Girls can be mean.  I know this is hard to believe right now, but some of your friends may turn out to be your enemies.  Mean girls often turn into mean women and the circle continues.

  • Always be yourself.  Don't let anyone convince you that you shouldn't be the way you are.  You are perfect.

  • Be nice to your siblings.  Some day they may live far away from you and you will long to be near them.

  • Continue to smile like you are in the picture above.  It will make people wonder what you are up to.

  • Try to remember, when you are 15, that you used to love to hold my hand.
Happy Birthday, middle daughter.  May all your wishes come true.

Love, Mommy
