Writer's Workshop: what I miss about the school year

Since starting to work in the school cafeteria, I have an entirely new perspective on the start of the school year. Summer has an entirely different feel to it. It used to be something I looked forward to ending. Now? I embrace it. I enjoy every fleeting moment of it.

However, I will admit that come August I start to long for my routine, I start to look forward to my return to the kitchen.

This week Mama Kat had great prompts including how you knew your child was growing up. Since I have already posted this letter to my 12 year old as well as this post about the tortures of puberty, I decided to skip the first prompt.

So today I will share with you five things I miss about the school year and five things I don't miss.

I miss the daily interaction with my co-workers.

I DO NOT miss the chaos that is our morning routine.

I miss having lunch with my principal.

I DO NOT miss my hairnet.

I miss the kindergartners.

I DO NOT miss the mess the kids make of the cafeteria.

I miss (most of) the teachers.

I DO NOT miss government meat products.

I miss, dare I say it, my boss.

I DO NOT miss the dish room and the dreaded GREEN SCRATCHY.

What do you miss about the school year?

My kids are out of school now and in the working world, but I can tell you a few things I don't miss.
1. I don't miss getting up in the morning to give them a ride to school.
2. I don't miss hearing the complaints like "Mr. J is such a jerk" and "Sure Mrs. G is nice to you, you're a parent, you should see her with the students" (which I later found out was true, nasty, nasty lady!!!!)
3. I don't miss hearing "OMG! I hate school sooooooo much"
But there are some things I do miss.
1. I miss hearing all the crazy things that happened during the day, whether it was something a teacher did or one of their friends.
2. I miss tennis and bowling matches. Jaryd was on both teams for all 4 years and I so enjoyed seeing him compete.
3. I miss some of the things from elementary school, like the book fairs and Parents As Reading Partners programs that I used to be involved with and the musicals the music teacher and one of the 5th grade teachers did with the 4th & 5th grade students.
Mostly, though I'm glad I don't have to deal with it anymore. I just burned out and got disillusioned with the district, which isn't what it used to be.

I just plain miss the school year because it gives me my much beloved "alone" time. : )

Sweet.

Your reference to a hairnet made me think of this guy who works in the deli department at the local Wal-Mart. He wears a hairnet across his JAW because he has a beard. He looks funny, but I understand the need for him to wear it on his FACE. If I worked in a deli or cafeteria, I wonder if I'd have to wear a mask across my chin with all these chin hairs popping up due to menopause? Huh.
