Awkward Parent Teacher Conferences: Part Two

This week we are going to talk about the time my daughter got a BB in music.

I know what you are thinking... "What in the world is a Double B?"

Let me explain. No there is too much. Let me sum up.

Our elementary grades are A=advanced, P=proficient, B=Basic and BB=below basic.

When said daughter came home with the BB, I was curious. How does one receive a below basic in music? Is she not participating? Is she refusing to sing? Is she causing a problem?

As part of my parent/teacher conference, I scheduled an additional meeting with the music teacher.*

I was told that my daughter marches to the rhythm of her own drum.

Seriously? Apparently, like Maisy, she too was a twiddler, a dreamer, a silly heart, and a jabber box.

I concluded from that meeting that there are worse things than a BB in music.

*please note that said music teacher is no longer teaching in our district and that our current music staff is fantastically gifted and appreciative or dreamers and silly hearts. Especially on an elementary level.

Ha! I enjoyed the clip!

I remember when the music teacher told me that my son was failing her class. They were playing the "recorder" at the time. She wanted him to practice a half hour every night. I told her, "Forget it, lady. He's barely passing his REAL classes and you want me to have him make time for YOUR class?" She was NOT happy with me, nosireebob!

Sounds like you suffered through some pretty bad teachers in your day.

My kids loved music at the elementary level. Of course they had an amazing teacher. He love all the silly hearts and dreamers in fact he encouraged them to be so. Unfortunately, their middle school experience wasn't so great and they wouldn't get involved in anything musical after that teacher ruined it for them.
They do both love music now, but listening to it and loving it is way different than being involved with it.
Glad they got rid of the bad music teacher! Kids should be able to have music as an outlet and a fun time.

As an educator, it's people like the one in the clip and the one your child faced that make me cringe and want to slap them around. These are children we are working with, the future of our society, our culture, and our world. If we put an end to dreaming and silly hearts, we put an end to creativity, invention, and progress. Where would we be if people had put the kibosh on silly dreamers like Einstein, Edison, Ford, or Bell?
