Why Youth Sports Drive Me Nuts

My son plays baseball in an 8-10 league. He has really improved this year as he seems to actually understand the game.

The boys on our team range from ages 6-9 and fielding is challenging. I think it's cute and I usually don't care if we lose as long as we try our best.

Some parents do not agree with my sentiment.

Opposing team parents have yelled things like "Drop it" while a 7 year old is trying to make a catch.

Parents on our own team have told their own child, who was proud of his first attempt at catching, that catching one out of 99 throws is a terrible satistic.

Saying one nice thing out of every hundred things you say is also a terrible satistic.

Opposing coaches have taken multiple bases on errors. Really? There's a five-runs-an-inning mercy rule. Do you really need to advance on an error?

Parents have suggested benching 7 year olds who aren't paying attention. Um...you can't be serious.

I don't think my son notices these things and for that I am grateful. He feels bad enough when he strikes out without any added input from us.

He is proud when he gets an out and when he overthrows first base we tell him that was a great try.

Baseball ends this week and I'm sort of glad. Not because I don't enjoy watching him play, but because I just can't bite my tongue any longer.

Weekend Update: a little here, a little there

It's time to start baseball.  Son is playing t-ball again this year.  It's his last season and then next year he will move up to C ball.  Friday was his first practice and it was 38 degrees.  Needless to say, we didn't really practice.  We just forked over fundraiser money and agreed to meet the following week.

Looks like Little G might be the oldest on the team.  Seems like there may be a lot of newbies.  The sad part about that is we are practicing in a field.  Not a baseball field.  Just a field.  It's kind of hard to teach little kids how to run to to first base and stay in the baseline when there is no first base or baseline.

I'm excited that we are on the Pittsburgh Pirates this year but am confused as to why the coach thinks that they wear yellow shirts.  I'm that's my neck of the words and I'm certain that they don't wear yellow.

Of course, we already own gray pants and white pants and his coach wants him to wear black pants.  I suppose I could have guessed that one.

Here's hoping the weather warms up a little this week so baseball becomes a little less painful.

Saturday and Sunday were low key days which is great because next week they both look crazy busy.  I finished the first major edit on my book.  Still not sure what, if anything, I'm going to do with it.  I've taken to reading a lot of teen fiction lately and a lot of times I find myself wondering how did this person get their book published.  I mean, let's be honest, unless you have an in, it's hard to get even a look.

Knowing that is a bit depressing.

Here's hoping you had a fantastic weekend.

Writer's Workshop - Summertime memories

When you take the field in games unplayed
It is my hope for you that your smile never fades.
May you always play like there's no place else to be
and your love of the game be easy to see.

Weekend update: baseball, picnics, swimming and ear pain

On Saturday we had a company picnic at a local ballpark.  The kids had a good time.  Above is a picture of the girls with Charlie Slider.  My son still isn't real wild about giant costumed characters and he didn't want to get in the picture.  We had wonderful weather for the game and the picnic was really nice.  To top it off it was Webkinz night at the stadium and everyone under 12 received a free one.  The kids were very excited about it.  You can see their dogs in the photo.
This is the section we sat in but we weren't lucky enought to catch a fly ball. The game was pretty good, though there were some silly errors that I thought you only saw in little league.
Sunday we had T-ball and soccer tryout.  We spent part of the afternoon at the pool.
I've been fighting with some ear pain on and off for the last 10 days and finally yesterday decided that I was going to chop of my ear.  The entire side of my face hurts.  I feel miserable.  I had my husband look at it and my ear canal is swollen shut.  I think I had a little cut in there about the size of a paper cut and now it is thoroughly infected.  I'm off to the doctors this afternoon for further torture.   I'm pretty sure that if he so much as touches it I'm going to scream!  I'm hoping for antibiotics and pain medication!
Seriously, it hurts almost as much as labor.
