What is the opposite of poverty?
A recent discussion prompted me to ponder "how much is enough?"
It is human nature to want more. It is human nature to want what others have.
But lets be serious. Having what you want and what you need are different. Most of us have MORE than what we need but not all we want.
Why is this so hard to comprehend?
Why is it so hard To teach our kids?
So tell me, my friends, what is the opposite of poverty? The answer is having enough.
Do you have enough?

funny thing, having enough...it never seems to satisfy....I have more thasn many, but I am always wanting...do you think it is an American culture thing, or just all humans ? :)
"Do you have enough?" Good question. I certainly have enough of many things, I have enough to live and get by, but sometimes I need more to get by than others. I guess enough is a relative term, depending on what your needs are. I hope that makes sense. And having enough isn't always enough.
to me opposite of poverty would be to be able to pay my monthly mortage without having to decide what doesn't get paid each month right now we have to rob peter to pay paul
This is something that we've struggled with in the past and are trying our best to change within our lives. I just recently bought a wall quote for a living room that reminds us each day "The secret to having it all is knowing you already do."
Wow. Deep thoughts here. I think we don't really appreciate having what we have utnil we don't have it. And 95% of us Americans have way more than enough.
Good food for thought. Too often we forget how blessed we really are compared to the true poor.
Great post.
Very important topic here. D'ya know we could talk about this for hours and hours!
Being able to afford decent housing, decent food and decent clothing is basically all I need and just that little bit more necessary to make life comfortable.
I know that we must be grateful for everything we can enjoy right now no matter how little we have. I cannot afford to have a car right now, but I enjoy walking around to do my groceries, to run errands, etc...
I cannot afford to have a big 50 inches LCD tv, but I enjoy reading and the library is only a 15 minutes walk away from home.
I cannot afford to go to the theater or the Symphony Hall, but there are plenty of free artistic event when you live in a big city, so why not take advantage of that and discover new things.
I connot afford to go on vacation at the beach, in the States or even less in Europe, but we have some wonderful parks around town where I can have a little pic-nic.
We get so much bombarded (especially from tv) with the idea that more is better, that to have more means more hapiness. I know now that this is all a lie.
In our world, it's all about perform and produce and perform and produce, more and more.
This said, there is nothing wrong at desiring the opportunity the experiment all our world can offer to the fullest. But not at any cost. Not at the cost of my peace of mind and serenity.
See... I told you. We could talk about this for hours... ;)
Hugs
