An Open Letter to my son at the start of second grade
Dear Little G.,
At the start of second grade, I wanted to write down some of my hopes and expectations for you.
Your age sneaks up on me. I think it is because you are the youngest. In my head you're my baby, but in reality you aren't a baby at all.
You are almost 8.
You are one of the oldest (and smallest) kids in your class.
I hope that second grade provides you with a better reading foundation. You still hate to read, which as a writer, breaks my heart.
You struggle with it and because of that you really don't like it.
I hope that second grade builds up your confidence and that you aren't so worried about what other people think. It's important to remember that it doesn't matter who finishes first or who has more written in their journal.
I hope that second grade shows you that it is okay to ask for help when you are struggling. I hope that you learn to ask more questions and to seek more answers.
I hope that second grade brings you more friends, more laughs and more adventures.
I hope that second grade is even better than 1st.
Love,
Mommy

OH my friend, you have done it again, shown your heart, and it beats strong, bright and full of love....
tears...even at my age a guy could use his mum :)

I absolutely love the open letters you write to your children.
OMG! I remember how much it was hard for me too... learning to read! I also remember my mum spending lots of time with me trying to help me... I also remember we laughed a lot... I guess it worked! :)
Hugs

Finally, can comment from my grown-up computer. My laptop screen made it impossible for me to see where to click!!! I LOVE this post and I love your blog. Keeping a good thought for the second-grader!
Wonderful post to your little one. I have really loved these letters to your children! Thanks you for sharing them with us.
Oh how the non-love for reading kills me to my core! I keep trying to remind myself I have two kids, and 1 out of 2 are better odds than neither of them enjoying words on paper. Great post. :)
Love your sweet note to your handsome son. I remember those days when I was afraid to ask for help. It's wonderful how you support your kids in every way. They are a lucky group!!
My kids started 3rd and 1st grades this year. My son said, "Mom, can you believe you have a 3rd grader?!"
"No, son. I cannot."
Also, regarding the reading, he will grow to love it (eventually) if you do. My mom is a new york times bestselling novelist, and for YEARS I would not read for pleasure outside of school, partly to spite her. Today, I read several books a month (which is a lot considering I have 3 jobs, 2 kids, 2 dogs and volunteer my a$$ off).
Just keep modeling the reading you do. He'll eventually catch on!
I am just loving these letters! And I wish so much that he discovers the joys of reading. When the whole reading thing kicks in, it wlll be wonderful. He is adorable by the way!
