Ten things I miss about sharing a room with my sister
I was listening to my girls cackle on and on tonight about cute boys, swimming, camp and other random items instead of going to sleep.
The total randomness of their conversation reminded me of all the things I miss about sharing a room with my sister.
Bunk Beds. We had tons of adventures that involved throwing each other off the top bunks and building cabins by drapping blankets from the top bunk down. One time we reenacted a scene from Days of Our Lives and another time we pretended to have our own apartment.
Built in bodyguard. If I heard a noise or if she did, were close enough to save each other. I still remember how I held her hand the night our attic was on fire and our mom was trying to calmly lead us outside. I told myself I was protecting her but I am certain I would have cried if she let go.
Someone nearby when you feel _____. Sad, sick, lonely, terrified, confused... You name it, there was always someone nearby. I had the chickenpox over Christmas vacation when I was in the second grade. I almost died. They were in my throat, in my eyelids and in my mouth. I have never been so miserable. My sister slept beside me. She got the pox, but not nearly as bad.
Laughter. I'm a strong believer in laughter, it builds you up when you feel down. It makes you feel complete. Over the years My sister and I have shared a lot of laughs together. Most recently we shared a room together at the beach and even though she values sleep more than just about anything, when I woke her up in the middle of the night because I was convinced someone was in the shower, she graciously checked and then we laughed for hours about it.
Secrets. Someone to share your secret crushes, your secret failures, your secret goals.
My girls fight alot but at night they become different little creatures. They giggle and read together. They talk endlessly about whatever, but yet they claim they want seperate rooms.
My husband thinks they should have them.
I really don't think they need them. They share a HUGE room.
When it isn't a school night, my son sleeps in there too. Sometimes cuddled up beside his oldest sister in her bed and other times just on the floor so they can all be closed to each other. He has his own room and doesn't really want it.
Someday they might all live multiple states away from each other and long to share a few laughs late into the night.
Did you share a room or have your own, what are the pros and cons?

11 random thoughts:
aw what a great post about having a sis Happy Memorial Day
I have 3 brothers and they shared a room, but I was the only girl and had my own. It was very small and was originally built to be a 'den' and was only 7'x7', my bed with the head and foot boards just fit. Tiny little room, but it was mine!
I have a daughter and a son and when they were younger, they used to sleep in each others rooms. Honestly if they weren't 22 & 19 now and figure it just isn't right, they would probably still camp out together at times. I think it was fun because they didn't have to do it.
I shared a room with my little brother (6 years difference). We had bunk beds. I love him but would have preferred my own room! My sister, 2-1/2 years older, had her own room next door to ours. It was easy to come and go, and she and I did a lot of the same things you and your sister did... with the added benefit of going our separate ways when we wanted.
For a few years I shared a room with both my brothers. It was cramped to say the least.
We would lay awake at night and tell stories to scare my youngest brother.
In the flood of 1972 I remember waking up and it was completely dark. I clearly remember not being able to see my hand in front of my face. I was glad we were all in the same room.
Then... my parents finished a room upstairs for me.... aaaahhhh....
As soon as there was drywall on the walls and subflooring on the floor, I took my mattress upstairs and made it my own.
I remember:
1) listening to the radio all night.
2) being glad that no one could look in the windows because I was on the second floor but then freaking out because I was sure aliens could hover their spacecraft outside the window
3) hearing my dad snore through the floor and open windows
4) the neighbor lady putzing around in her kitchen all night and singing hymns
5) eventually getting a little black and white television and watching harness racing and CHILLER theater
6) playing Donny Osmond, The Partridge Family, and Bobby Sherman albums over and over and over...
I think it is good to share a room with siblings... but I loved having my own room. I am certain it would have been different if I had a sister.
This post just made my heart swell and brought back wonderful memories! I always shared a room with my twin sister, and at one time my older sister, too. I still have a good relationship with my sisters, and my daughter often comments how she wishes she had a sister. She has a brother, but it's not the same!

I always had my own room as the only girl but my brothers shared and I was always jealous … except when I wanted my privacy. Reading your post makes me wish I had a sister and we sahred a room!!!!
Wow, the memories of sharing a room with my sisters just came flooding back. Thank you so much!!
Heya Kisa, just popping by to let you know I have given you an award on my blog! Hugs!
Great memories. It is a sweet time if you can share a room with your siblings. I remember late night laughing fits and imaginative fun that only we "got".
