What do you find offensive?
Let's face it. Humans are strange. We all have different viewpoints. We all have different lifestyles. We all have different likes and dislikes.
That's why when I hear that something is actually offensive to someone that is completely benign to me I become intrigued.
This weekend I learned that some people are offended by.....Easter Eggs.
Seriously?
Apparently there are a few people attending my church who don't want Easter eggs or bunnies on the church bulletin board. After all there is a daycare there so we should probably make sure that we don't scare those attending with these atrocities.
After all, you can't be a good Christian and like the Easter Bunny....or can you?
It's your prerogative if you don't want to explore the wonders of fantasy with your children. If you want to eliminate the Easter Bunny from your kids life...who am I to stop you.
But let's be clear...you don't get to eliminate the Easter Bunny from my kids life.
I'm fine with a spring bulletin board that has flowers on it. It can stay up longer and makes for less work. But I also remember a time when churches held egg hunts and communities gathered there in camaraderie.
My grandfather used to spend hours decorating eggs, which he would have blessed. Sometimes he delivered his egg-artwork to shuts in and hospitalized. Guess what--they weren't offended.
It's true...the egg is a pagan symbol of rebirth and maybe it doesn't have a place on a church bulletin board. But I can tell you this, if it somehow ended up on one, it wouldn't offend me at all.
And perhaps it shouldn't.

I often think God sits in heaven scratching his head at what we let offend us...
I never knew that the egg is a pagen symbol. I always saw it as a sign of rebirth, maybe not of Christ, but of nature and the coming of spring and isn't that something God has something to do with?
As for what I find offensive, well I find people who give poor customer service offensive. Especially if it isn't just poor service, but that person is down right rude.
Wow. No Easter Bunny at Easter? I suppose these people don't want Santa either since he's not based on anything religious?
It never ceases to amaze me how some churches can get caught up in legalism....let us be real here....the easter bunny, easter eggs, valentine's day, may day, mothers day etc...are all a part of the american culture. We need to put things in perspective and enjoy life. I don't think God would be offended if we had an easter egg hunt on the church lawn.
Oh, and what offends me? Hypocrisy in the church.
Are you serious?!
What stuffies.
That reminds me of the people that "ban" Halloween. I had one seriously ask me once, "What would Jesus do if He were here on Halloween?" I looked right at her and said, "He'd go trick-or-treating with my kids so he could meet the neighbors."
Are these same people offended by Santa?
I think people go to great lengths to be offended about stuff that, in the long run, is very harmless. Let's get upset about really upsetting things like war, violence and hunger.
It's so harmless. I don't see why people get all worked up about something like a cute decoration.
